Project Description

Palmer was commissioned by the Halton Region to aid in the replacement of 2 km of watermain needed to accommodate the increased demand from the growing population in the surrounding area of Halton Hills.

We used an integrated geotechnical and hydrogeological approach for this project. Geotechnical work involved analysis of exploratory boreholes, unconfined compression testing, splitting tensile (Brazilian) testing, soil sampling and testing to characterize subsurface conditions as well as bedrock properties and depths. Our hydrogeological investigation included permeability testing, water well survey, water quality testing and analyses to support an Environmental Activity Sector Registration (EASR) and a Permit to Take Water (PTTW).

Based on the results of the study, we recommended parameters to support design, excavation, bedrock tunneling methods, construction dewatering and backfilling. We also sampled and analyzed soils to establish the appropriate off-site disposal of excavated material and prepared a geotechnical baseline report to support the tender process.
