In the province of Nova Scotia, you must be registered with the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia in order to practice midwifery.

Click on the link above to download a copy of our initial application. Be sure to review our checklist to ensure you have all the supporting documentation needed to complete your application. When completed, please submit your application and fees.

Number of Weeks

Please use our checklist to ensure that you have included all of the supporting documentation required. We cannot register a midwife until all documents and the fee have been submitted. Usually, this can take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks to process once we have a complete submission.

Requirements

You must have received an offer of employment from one of the Health Authorities: the IWK) IWK Health Centre – Join the TEAM (nshealth.ca) ) or Nova Scotia Health (Nova Scotia Health Authority (nshealth.ca))

  • Have successfully completed an approved program* of midwifery studies;
  • Have successfully completed the approved examinations;
  • Hold valid certification in neonatal resuscitation (NRP), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), obstetrical emergencies skills (ESW) and Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS).
  • Hold individual practice insurance for HIROC (Insurance | Healthcare Insurance Reciprocal of Canada (hiroc.com)

Checklist

  • Schedule 1, for applicants with previous other names
  • Proof of Canadian citizenship, or proof of permanent resident status
  • Proof of authorization for employment in Canada
  • Consent and forms submitted to request Letter of Professional Conduct from each Canadian regulatory body where you are or have been registered

  • Notarized copy of registration for each professional registration other than midwifery, from every jurisdiction where you are or have been registered
  • Notarized copy of each degree, diploma or certificate relating to midwifery education (CMRE Results – if applicable)
  • Schedule 2:  Clinical Experience by Practice Site, and Hospital Privileges/Employment
  • Competency Assessment and/or Bridging Program results sent directly to Registrar
  • Copy of current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation
  • Copy of current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
  • Copy of current certification in Emergency Skills in Obstetrics

Approved Programs

Approved program means educational programs approved by the MRCNS. There are several Canadian midwifery programs that have been approved. These include programs at University of British Columbia, McMaster University, Ryerson University and Laurentian University (Ontario), Universite de Trois-Rivières (Quebec) and Mount Royal University (Calgary).

Routes to Midwifery Registration in Nova Scotia

New Graduate from an approved Canadian Midwifery Education Program

For Registration under this route, an applicant must:

  • Provide proof of successful completion of Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam (CMRE)
  • Provide original documentation of graduation, including transcripts
  • Provide Proof of Current Certification in CPR (valid within 2 years), ESW (valid within 2 years),
  • FHS through Perinatal Services BC (valid within 2 years) and NRP (valid within 1 year)
  • Provide a current criminal record with vulnerable sector check (within 1 year)
  • Submit an registration application fee ($50)
Registration with another Canadian Regulatory body

Under the agreement for mobility between Canadian Regulators, a midwife who is registered in one Province may apply for registration in another Canadian jurisdiction.

For Registration under this route, an applicant must:

  • Request a Letter of Professional Standing from your previous provincial regulatory body(s): must be sent directly from regulator
  • Proof of Current certification in CPR (valid within 2 years), ESW (valid within 2 years), FHS through Perinatal Services BC (valid within 2 years) and NRP (valid within 1 year)
  • Provide original document of current criminal record with vulnerable sector check (within 1 year)
  • Pay Registration application fee ($50)
International Midwives

Internationally trained midwives can apply for registration and become members of the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia after (1) having completed an approved bridging program and a competency assessment, (2) having received an offer of employment from the health authorities. The Council has approved the following programs:

Education Programs

Canadian Midwifery Graduates

One of the routes for registration in Nova Scotia is through the completion of a baccalaureate level degree in midwifery. A graduate is also required to complete the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE) offered through the Canadian Midwifery Regulators’ Council.

Registered in Another Canadian Jurisdiction

According to Chapter 7 of the Agreement on Internal Trade, a general registrant midwife in any Canadian province or territory can be registered with the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia. The applicant must give consent for the regulatory body with which they are currently or have been previously registered to provide the Council with Proof of their Professional Conduct.

Internationally Educated Midwives

Internationally trained midwives can apply for registration and become members of the Midwifery Regulatory Council of Nova Scotia after (1) having completed an approved bridging program and a competency assessment, (2) having received an offer of employment from the health authorities.

For any of one of these programs to be considered complete, a candidate must successfully complete a recommended clinical placement.

License Renewal

Clinical License

Registered midwives must renew their registration each year. They must ensure they have current certification in neonatal resuscitation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), fetal health surveillance and emergency skills. They must also maintain a certain level of practice to ensure their skills are current.

Non-Clinical License

The practice of midwifery as defined in section 2 (i) of the Midwifery Act includes the non-clinical activities of research, education, consultation, management, administration, regulation, policy or system development related to midwifery.

Registration

To practice midwifery in Nova Scotia and use the title ‘Midwife”, a person must be registered with the Council.

Practice

In Nova Scotia, only midwives who are registered with MRCNS can call themselves “Registered Midwives”.

Educate

In Nova Scotia, midwives are required to complete a baccalaureate level degree in midwifery, as well as the Canadian Midwifery Registration Examination (CMRE).

Quality Assurance

When a client chooses a midwife, they must be confident they are working with a healthcare professional who is competent, ethical and skilled.

To practice midwifery in Nova Scotia and use the title ‘Midwife”, a person must be registered with the Council.
